Once-Daily Pill

Wegovy® (semaglutide) tablets are an FDA-approved, once-daily oral medication, and the only semaglutide tablet approved for weight loss in adults. Used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Wegovy® helps adults with obesity, or adults with excess weight who also have a weight-related medical condition, lose weight and keep it off.

Wegovy® may cause possible thyroid tumors, including cancer, and carries a boxed warning for this risk. Do not use Wegovy® if you or any family member have ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you've had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any ingredient in Wegovy®. Tell your healthcare provider if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. Patients should carefully review all safety information and discuss any concerns with a licensed healthcare professional before starting treatment.

Wegovy® may cause serious side effects including pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, increased risk of low blood sugar (especially alongside other diabetes medicines), dehydration leading to kidney problems, severe stomach problems, serious allergic reactions, vision changes in people with type 2 diabetes, and increased heart rate. The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, changes in skin sensation, headache, fatigue, upset stomach, dizziness, bloating, belching, low blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, gas, stomach flu, heartburn, and hair loss.

Wegovy® should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or other GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines. It is not known if Wegovy® tablets are safe and effective in people under 18. Tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had problems with your pancreas or kidneys, have type 2 diabetes with a history of diabetic retinopathy, are scheduled for surgery or a procedure requiring anesthesia or deep sedation, are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, as breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Wegovy® tablets.

A licensed healthcare professional will determine if Wegovy® is appropriate based on an individual's medical history, BMI, and treatment goals. Suitability varies from patient to patient, and clinical evaluation is required before a prescription can be issued.

Wegovy® is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and dispensed as a one-month supply of tablets (30 tablets per bottle). Each order includes pharmacy labeling and usage information to support safe handling.

Wegovy® is an FDA-approved medication manufactured under federal quality standards, unlike compounded GLP-1 preparations, which are customized formulations prepared by state-licensed compounding pharmacies and are not FDA-approved. Patients should discuss both FDA-approved and compounded options with a licensed clinician to determine which is most appropriate for their needs.

Coverage for GLP-1 weight management medications varies widely by plan and is often limited. Eligible Medicare patients prescribed Wegovy® for a covered FDA-approved indication may access reduced pricing under current Medicare terms; eligibility is determined by CMS and is not guaranteed. Patients can speak with a licensed provider about self-pay pricing, and some may be able to submit receipts to an HSA or FSA for reimbursement.
